Assessment at the Entrance
Port of Melbourne Corporation has conducted
underwater video assessment at the Entrance of Port Phillip Bay.
The assessment is a requirement of the Channel Deepening
Project’s Environmental Management Plan (EMP).
The towed video footage was taken over the period 2-3 May
2008, following the commencement of dredging at the Entrance on 5
April.
The footage is indicative of the seabed profile as a result of
dredging in the area. The total footage however runs for in excess
of 12 hours and is not replicated here.
Notably, following the trial dredge at the Entrance in 2005,
assessments then showed evidence of subsequent regrowth in the trial
dredge area just months later. This footage is also available on
this website via the second table on the right.
Since the video footage was taken in May this year, a series of
clean-ups of residual material at the Entrance has occurred in
accordance with the requirements of the EMP, and further video
assessment will also be carried out.
Dredging at the Entrance is an integral part of the project
and is one of the most technically challenging aspects of the
project.
Notably, it was the first time in the port’s history that the
Entrance has been deepened without the use of explosives.
Importantly, as of October 2008 and as forecast in the project’s
environmental assessment, there have been no indications of
significant environmental disturbances from the dredging, most
notably in relation to tides, tidal currents, sea level and marine
life.

The total footage is available for viewing
upon request.
Further information on Entrance monitoring activities will
be added as these activities are completed. |
