Home > About the port >

The Port of Melbourne is Australia’s largest container and general cargo port, handling around 37 per cent of the nation’s container trade.

Forty-two container shipping lines, as well as a number of other general cargo carriers, make around 3500 ship calls a year to Melbourne, providing services to ports in all parts of the world.

It is serviced by more than 100 nautical miles of shipping channels and fairways between the Port Phillip Heads and the berths on the Yarra and Maribyrnong Rivers and at Williamstown. The port waters cover 101,188 hectares of Port Phillip Bay
